Pleiades Cluster
Catalog Designation: Messier 45
Distance: 444 light years
Constellation: Taurus
Type: Star Cluster / Reflection Nebula
This magnificent star cluster and reflection nebula is known as the Pleaides. It has roots in ancient civilization being known as the “Seven Sisters” or “Subaru” in Japanese culture. Located within northern winter constellation Taurus, the Pleaides can be seen with the naked eye as a faint, tightly compact group of stars.
The surrounding reflection nebula is caused by the intense star glow of the hot B-type stars that comprise the cluster. These bright stars illuminate the interstellar gas and dust, giving it it’s signature blue glow. The Pleiades is among the closest clusters to Earth, and is thus greatly studied by professional and amateur astronomers alike.
